On 18 March 2005 Ben finally arrived home and over the next twelve or so months went through everything to try and get better. He was involved in several rehabilitation centre's, hydro-therapy, kinesiology, acupuncture and was also seeing a naturopath.

While this was going on he also had to have quite a few operations on his eye and face to graft nerves from his leg to his face. In total he has had about 456 staples and stitches, internally and externally. After about a year of rehab and therapy he had progressed as far as he was going to get so he bought himself a gym set, treadmill, rower and any other type of fitness equipment he could get his hands on.

He uses this equipment religiously every day but his condition doesn’t allow him to walk unaided or drive a car. At the start of 2008 he bought himself a recumbent bike for a bit of freedom and exercise. He later learned, after looking into racing them, that this was a touring bike and there was not very many of them. So he is now looking at buying a hand cycle (which you can race) to rekindle his competitive spirit. There are races all over Australia and also in conjunction with the Paralympics team based at Homebush.
